Cultural Context and Significance

The term 银河 (yínhé) is inextricably linked to the ancient Chinese myth of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl (牛郎织女, Niúláng Zhīnǚ). In this story, Zhīnǚ, a celestial weaver girl (representing the star Vega), falls in love with Niúláng, a mortal cowherd (representing the star Altair). They marry and have children, but their union is forbidden by the gods. The formidable Queen Mother of the West (王母娘娘) takes Zhīnǚ back to the heavens and, using her golden hairpin, scratches a line across the sky to separate the lovers forever. This line became the 银河, the Silver River. Moved by their sorrow, all the magpies on Earth form a bridge (鹊桥, quèqiáo) across the 银河 once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, allowing the lovers to briefly reunite. This day is celebrated as the 七夕节 (Qīxī Jié), or the Qixi Festival, which is now widely known as Chinese Valentine's Day.
