The term `貔貅` is used almost exclusively to refer to the mythical creature itself, primarily in the context of Feng Shui, art, and jewelry. It is not a common conversational word outside of these topics.
Feng Shui Items: You will frequently see small to large statues of Pixiu in homes, offices, and especially places of business like restaurants, shops, and casinos. They are often placed in pairs, facing the main entrance, to “capture” the wealth energy (`qi`) flowing in.
Personal Charms: Pixiu are extremely popular as personal accessories. Jade, obsidian, or gold Pixiu are carved into bracelets, pendants, and keychains. It is believed that wearing a Pixiu bracelet on the left hand helps to draw in wealth.
A Symbol of Unrelenting Acquisition: In a more metaphorical, though less common sense, a person or company that is extremely aggressive in making money and never seems to lose it might be jokingly called a `貔貅`. This implies they only take in and never give out.
