The concept of 化解 is deeply rooted in the Chinese cultural value of
和谐 (héxié) - harmony. In traditional and modern Chinese culture, maintaining social harmony and avoiding direct, public confrontation is often prized above all else. Openly “winning” an argument at the expense of someone else's
面子 (miànzi), or “face,” can be seen as a clumsy, short-sighted victory that damages the long-term
关系 (guānxi), or relationship.
