Comparison to “Promote”: In English, “promote” can be quite broad. We can “promote” a product (advertise it), “promote” a person (give them a higher rank), or “promote” awareness (spread information).
促进 (cùjìn) is more specific. It's almost never used for advertising a product (that's
推广 tuīguǎng) or for a job promotion (that's
晋升 jìnshēng). Instead,
促进 is used for advancing abstract processes, conditions, or relationships, like “cooperation,” “development,” “health,” or “understanding.” It implies a more direct, hands-on intervention to cause positive change, much like a catalyst in a chemical reaction.
