It was a reactive measure, not a proactive choice. This contrasts sharply with the Western concept of a “gap year.” A gap year is often a celebrated, proactive decision to travel, work, or pursue personal growth before or during university. While 休学 (xiūxué) can be used for these reasons today, it doesn't carry the same inherently positive, adventurous connotation. Applying for 休学 is a formal administrative process. It requires a valid reason and official approval from the school. While the stigma is lessening, especially in top universities where students might 休学 to start a business (创业), the decision is still considered more serious and less casual than in many Western cultures. It's less about “finding yourself” and more about dealing with a specific, pressing situation or opportunity.
