The concept of a 专栏 (zhuānlán) is very similar to a “column” or “op-ed” in Western media, but its role has evolved significantly in modern China. Historically, in print media, influential columnists (专栏作家, zhuānlán zuòjiā) were often respected public intellectuals who could shape public discourse on cultural, social, and sometimes even political issues. Their 专栏 was a crucial platform for nuanced opinion in an environment often dominated by official news. In the digital age, the concept has been democratized. Platforms like 知乎 (Zhīhū), a Quora-like site, and WeChat Official Accounts allow anyone to create their own 专栏. This has shifted the meaning from being an exclusive feature in a major publication to also include personal blogs or a series of expert articles on a niche topic. A programmer might have a 专栏 about AI, while a chef might have one about Sichuan cuisine. Compared to a Western “op-ed” (opinion-editorial), which is often political and appears on a dedicated page, a 专栏 can cover any topic—lifestyle, finance, technology, relationships—and is defined more by its recurring nature and consistent voice than its placement or political bent.
专栏 (zhuānlán) is a standard term used across all forms of media.
